Dusk

Dusk is a 2D roguelike game made in Unity. The game was developed in two months as part of the final project for CSS 385 - Intro to Game Development at University of Washington Bothell.

Game

You awaken as a robot called DU-5K, and explore a bleak near-future, post-apocalyptic world after catastrophic events bathed the world in smog and darkness. Venture into randomly generated underground dungeons and survive the darkness and the corrupted drones that lie within. Collect scrap to upgrade your parts and descend further below, but don’t let your battery die or you will be left alone in the shadows.

Development

This was my first ever full game made in Unity, and I worked in a team along with two others. Our team was brought together by a love for storytelling in games, so the story behind Dusk was actually something quite important to us, along with a desire to do a roguelike or dungeon crawler type game. The levels would have also been hand-crafted, but in the final game ended up being randomly generated due to time constrants. We used a lot of preexisting assets as there was no artists in the group, since the class was mainly for Computer Science students.

Retrospective

Looking back there’s a lot of improvements that can be made to this game now that I have much more knowledge and experience with Unity. I may revisit the concept of Dusk at some point in the future but will likely start completely afresh gameplay-wise.
